Staying at their studies

At an almajiri school in Kaduna, learning materials and daily support are keeping boys at their lessons.

The boys in these photographs study at an almajiri school in Kaduna: dozens of them sharing a courtyard, wooden study tablets in hand. Many live far from their families. For boys like these, hunger is the single biggest reason studies get abandoned: when the next meal has to be found on the street, the lesson loses.

The foundation's support is deliberately unglamorous: study materials, meals brought to where the boys learn, and repeat visits so the support is something they can count on rather than a one-off event.

The smiles in these photos are real and recent. Keeping boys at their lessons is slow, ongoing work, and it is exactly what the education programme exists to fund.
